Kentaro Nagai
Art Director / Graphic Designer

Graduate of Tokyo Zokei University. After working for Tycoon Graphics,
he established Graflex Directions on July 20, 2006 (37 years after the day
man set foot on the moon for the first time).
With “VIVID & BOLD” being the overall concept, he handles art direction and
design for CI, BI, editorials, packages, products, he pursues the possibilities
of expression through visual communications.

About the name of Graflex Directions
(Graphic Flight Experiment with Directions)

This company was so named with an inspiration from an experiment called
“HYFLEX”. “HYFLEX (Hypersonic Flight Experiment)” is an experiment which
was undertaken by NASDA (National Space Development Agency of Japan),
now JAXA, in 1996.
The aim of this experiment was to develop technologies of the Space
Transportation System such as the Space Shuttle in the field of architecture,
production and flight, and also to acquire various kinds of data which was
difficult to acquire through ground experiments.
Although the industry emphasis unfortunately shifted from a space
transportation system to the H-II Launch Vehicle after this experiment,
I decided to name my company after the experiment as I was greatly inspired
by their foresight and determination to create space shuttles in Japan.
I seriously plan to get involved in space development in the field of graphic
design in the future.

パッケージ、プロダクト等のアートディレクション、及びデザインを手がけ、
ビジュアルコミュニケーションにおける表現の可能性を追求。

About the name of Graflex Directions
(Graphic Flight Experiment with Directions)

この会社名は"HYFLEX"という実験にインスパイアされ名付けられた。
“HYFLEX（Hypersonic Flight Experiment）”とは、日本の宇宙開発事業団である
NASDA（現JAXA）が1996年に行った実験である。
この実験は、スペースシャトルのような循環型輸送システム（極超音速域で
飛行機のように揚力を持って飛行する機体）の設計・製作・飛行技術を蓄積すると
ともに、地上試験では取得が困難な各種データを取得することを目的としていた。
実験の結果、データ取得には成功したが、トラブルにより機体は回収されなかった。
その後循環型輸送システムではなく、H-IIロケットに開発の重点が置かれたという
状況を見ると残念だが、日本版スペースシャトルを作ろうとした、その先見の明と
心意気に感銘を受け、会社名の基礎とした。
将来、グラフィックデザインの立場から、宇宙開発に関わりたいと本気で考えている。
